Mirage volcano Review
The Mirage volcano is closed for renovation until late 2008. Expect construction in front of the property.
Things will heat up at the Mirage this winter, when the hotel’s signature volcano reopens with a brand new look, feel and sound.
Combining the talents of a rock 'n' roll hall of famer Mickey Hart from the Grateful Dead, international music sensation Zakir Hussain and an award-winning design firm WET, the iconic Strip-front feature is soon to unveil its $25 million top-to-bottom overhaul.
The attraction, which opened in 1989, will feature an original tribal-sounding soundtrack, a giant fire shooter that will spray fire 60 feet into the air, flowing water, steam, and much more.
“The show is going to come right up to the sidewalk,” said Jim Doyle, director of special technologies for WET, the same company that designed the world-famous Fountains at the Bellagio. “It will rock you on your heels a bit.”
Spectators will also feel the warmth as well as the vibrations from the soundtrack, which will be played over a state-of-the-art system from Meyer Sound and features instruments like large steel drums, a Pythagorean monochord, gongs and conch shells.
“Zakir and I immersed ourselves in the legends and myths and studied what really makes volcanos work,” said Hart. “The result, a true union of the senses, will rattle your bones, just like a real volcano.”
