Live like a local: Frankie's Tiki Room

Las Vegas has many local joints, places that have become a staple among the native crowd. But being a tourist we’d understand if you didn’t know what lived past the glittery lights of the Strip. Honestly, who can blame you, with all there is to do it’s hard enough to eat at every restaurant that serves custom tacos let alone to leave and explore the surrounding valley.

In reality it isn't easy to become a local joint in Vegas considering the growing number of restaurants and bars that open and close each year. But locals really value these places and often take much pride in them.

Take Frankie's Tiki Room. Built because, well, this town lacked a true authentic tiki bar. That was reason enough to take a closer look. (OK, sure, the unique drink menu didn't hurt).

Frankie's Tiki Room

In 2008 P Moss, owner of Double Down Saloon, decided that after all the recent closing tiki joints in town he was going to open his own version. And so after buying Frankie’s Bar & Cocktail lounge, remodeling the venue and partnering up with Bamboo Ben to help build it, Frankie’s Tiki Room was born.

From the moment you first step foot inside Frankie’s to the moment you have your first drink everything about this place will most likely remind you of every movie you’ve ever seen with a tiki theme but with a Vegas touch.

There’s a red glow that engulfs the dimly lit bar, which is surrounded by hand carved tiki statues. The walls are completed composed of bamboo and there’s a fisherman’s net that hangs over the ceiling complete with pufferfish lights made from real pufferfish. Even the artwork on the wall is created in custom fashion for this bar featuring various island themed drawings with a twist.

What Makes it Special

Everything, but in particular most would agree their extensive custom drink list is really what makes this place stand out. Sure you can still order your typical rum and coke but why would you want to in a place that offers specialty drinks such as the bearded clam, zombie, scurvy and Dr. no. Their menu is complete with 32 original drinks, some of which come served up in a custom tiki mug that are available for purchase. Oh and did we mention the custom mugs are designed by various artists specifically for Frankie’s. You won’t be able to find mugs like these anywhere else.

But the absolute best part about the cocktail menu is the skull count below the drink that warns you before even ordering the drink how strong in alcohol content it will be. Skulls range on a scale from three to five, with three being the lightest in alcohol and five being the strongest. But don’t be fooled, some of the fives are so strong that after two you most likely won’t need a third, which you can blame the 160 proof rum for.

Why You Need to Visit  Until recently, this was the only surviving tiki lounge in Las Vegas, the ONLY and for a good six years. If you don’t want to visit it for the custom drinks, authentic hand carved bamboo design and sheer Las Vegas history engrained in the name then you have to visit it for the sole reason that it’s the only surviving tiki lounge in Las Vegas. Think of it this way in a town where a lot of things come and go and/or change names or get replaced by the next cooler version it’s rare to find something that is considered the one and only – a unicorn if you will.

Gondola ride

Then you'll be ready for a night out just for two. Take a stroll through the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in the early evening or a romantic gondola ride at The Venetian. Then head into the Four Queens Hotel and look for Hugo's Cellar. As you might guess, it's in the basement of the hotel - a rustic, charming and vintage Vegas restaurant awaits you. The food and ambience are top-notch; both complemented by some of Vegas' finest servers. And tradition here is strong, as every lady receives a complimentary rose upon leaving. For the ultimate in intimacy, dine in the 50-seat gourmet room at Michael's inside the South Point.

Eiffel Tower Experience

If you don't want to dine in a cellar, you can have your head in the clouds instead, overlooking Las Vegas at the Stratosphere's Top of the World restaurant, or experience the ultimate in romantic getaways at Eiffel Tower Restaurant. Great food, piano entertainment and a view of the city - it's a Valentine's Day dinner your partner will never forget. Just across Las Vegas Boulevard, there is no better waterfront dining experience than Le Cirque. Exquisite French cuisine and an extensive wine list will tempt your taste buds as you enjoy the famous dancing Fountains of Bellagio.

Chandelier Bar

Afterward, get cozy and enjoy some of Las Vegas' unique nightlife, from the panoramic views at Drai's Nightclub atop The Cromwell to the retro-swagger of Matt Goss at Caesars Palace. Then enjoy late-night cocktails at The Chandlier at The Cosmopolitan, a unique three-level bar with different experience on each.

Las Vegas weddings

Of course, if you're looking to tie the knot, Las Vegas knows a thing or two about weddings. The Bellagio is one of several resorts with special wedding day packages just for Valentine's Day

16 things to do in 2016 in Las Vegas

As we head toward the halfway point of 2016, it may feel like the year is soaring past you quicker than the Slotzilla zip line down Fremont Street. But never fear, there's still plenty of time to complete our list of the 16 biggest things happening in Las Vegas in 2016.

1. 2016 Presidential Debate: It may come as a shock to some that the final presidential debate of 2016 is going to be held in Las Vegas, but this city is known for much more than just partying and gambling. Its ability to host high-profile events throughout the years has helped to put this city on the map as a serious place to do business. Las Vegas has even been ranked No. 1 for the place to hold meetings and conventions in North America. We’re certain this is likely to be one of the biggest events of the year in Las Vegas. (October 16, Thomas & Mack Center, 4505 S. Maryland Pkwy., Las Vegas, NV 89154)

2. Guy Fieri’s El Burro Borracho: Yes, that’s right. Guy Fieri ihas brought a second restaurant to Las Vegas, El Burro Borracho, which translates to the Drunken Donkey. If you think the name is crazy, then you’ll be shocked to find out that the dishes are just as crazy. Restaurant goers can expect to see food items such as drunken fish tacos, lava rock shrimp and Acapulco gold salad. (Opened March 2016, Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, 3700 W. Flamingo Rd., Las Vegas, NV 89103)

Route 91 Festival

3. Return of Music Festivals: This year, Las Vegas welcomes the return of the Electric Daisy Carnival (June 17-19), iHeart Radio music fest (TBD) and Route 91 Harvest Festival (Sept. 30-Oct. 2). Be sure to get your tickets before they sell out!

4. Jennifer Lopez - All I Have: It’s no surprise that Jennifer Lopez would bring her first ever headlining residency, All I Have, to the Entertainment Capital of the World. Fans are enjoying a once-in-a-lifetime experience seeing her like they never have before. The show runs until June and includes a total of 20 performances. (Opened January 20, Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, 3667 S. Las Vegas Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89109)

Las Vegas Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89158)

7. Caesars Palace 50th Anniversary: This year, Caesars Palace celebrates its Golden Year anniversary, and in celebration, it will be unveiling its new Julius Tower, which includes 587 newly designed hotel rooms. Throughout the rooms, guests will be able to view artwork of showgirl costumes hand drawn on Roman statues. (Begin stay on January 1)

Garth Brooks

8. T-Mobile Arena: Continuing the opening celebrations with a concert lineup that includes George Strait (Apr. 22-23, Sept. 9-10, Dec. 2-3), Garth Brooks (June 24-25, July 2-4) and The Dixie Chicks (July 16) already lined up, T-Mobile Arena is going to be home to huge events throughout 2016. The 20,000-capacity arena was built to house everything from sporting events such as basketball, boxing and hockey, to concerts and large performances.

9. Intrigue Nightclub: Intrigue is a nightclub like no other in Las Vegas, not because of its design, but because of its concept. Wynn Las Vegas has redefined the nightclub experience with the opening of Intrigue. (Opened 2016, Location: Paris Las Vegas, 3655 S. Las Vegas Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89109)

12. Topgolf Flagship location: This is not your typical Topgolf. In fact, there’s never been a Topgolf created like the one that’s coming to the MGM Grand. The venue will be four levels, and will include a restaurant, bar, stage for concerts, cabanas, water features and, of course, climate-controlled hitting bays. The location even plans on staying open until the early morning hours. (Opening spring, MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, 3799 S. Las Vegas Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89109)

13. The W Hotel: The Lux tower at SLS will be transformed into The W Las Vegas. Hotel guests who stay at The W hotel will have their own private check-in and lobby area, referred to as The W Living Room. The hotel will also feature a W-branded spa and pool bar area known as WET. (Opening September, SLS Las Vegas, 2535 S. Las Vegas Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89109)

14. Lucky Dragon Hotel & Casino: While we’re not certain it’s set to open in 2016, we've been so eagerly awaiting it that we’re adding this to the list in the hopes that it does. The Lucky Dragon Hotel & Casino plans to be a 10-story Asian-themed resort decorated in a ruby-red color. It promises that visitors can expect an “authentic Asian cultural and gaming experience” inside the hotel. They’re offering everything from high-end dining, bars and lounges, to a pool complex and fashion boutiques sourced from Asia. Even the signage will be written in both English and Chinese. (Potentially opening 2016)

15. Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips: This will be Gordon Ramsay’s fourth restaurant in Las Vegas and its opening has been rumored for over a year now. Those who visit the restaurant will be greeted by two London-style, red telephone booths at the entrance, as well as a Union Jack-patterned fish that hangs over the doorway. On the menu, you’ll find hearty items such as bangers and mash, and chicken planks. (Opening in summer, The LINQ Hotel & Casino, 3535 S. Las Vegas Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89109)

16. Beauty & Essex: Not only is this a restaurant and a lounge, but it’s also a pawn shop. This multitiered dining experience was developed by a partnership of TAO Group and restaurateur Chris Santos. There’s no menu yet, but chef Santos is particularly known for creating innovative share-plate dishes. (Opening in 2016, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, 3708 S. Las Vegas Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89109)
