Alabama Shakes

Alabama Shakes singer Brittany Howard's powerful, unfinished voice has been compared to Janis Joplin's. Howard and bassist Zac Cockrell started writing songs while they attended high school together near Athens, Ala. The group gained ground with fans starting in 2011, with its self-titled EP that won the band an invitation to play the CMJ Music Marathon in New York.

Since then, Alabama Shakes has earned international recording contracts and released its first full-length album, "Boys & Girls," last year. The group closed the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival last year. The the less than two years since they burst into American youth consciousness, the musicians have played "Conan," the "Late Show with David Letterman," "Saturday Night Live," "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and on British late-night TV.

Alabama Shakes' raw, drawling sound is a music festival junkie's dream. Honest and organic, these performers are not ones to be dazzled by the glamour of the Entertainment Capital of the World. But with their undeniable talent and a passion that bleeds through every lyric, they're sure to dazzle the crowd when they hit the stage at the Pearl at Palms this summer.
