From performing on the stand-up comedy stage to hosting his own successful talk show, Bill Maher has done it all.
Born in New York and raised in New Jersey, Maher began his comedy career after graduating from Cornell University as an English major. He honed his skills in the New York club scene during the early '80s.
He started his acting career by earning small roles in comedies like "D.C. Cab." He also landed a supporting role as a sleazy attorney in the sitcom "Sara," starring Geena Davis.
In addition, Maher was featured on Comedy Central's "The A-List," HBO's "One Night Stand" and as a special correspondent for "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno."
After his turn in sitcoms and movies, Maher found his perfect forum with the talk show "Politically Incorrect." The show was launched in 1993 on Comedy Central. It placed Maher at the center of a diverse panel of four guests from the worlds of politics, media, literature, and entertainment. Through heated debate mediated by Maher, guests discussed various opinions about the hottest issues of the day.
The show won four Cable ACE awards and then switched to ABC where it was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series.
Maher has also written a book highlighting memorable moments from his show, called "Does Anyone Have A Problem With That? Politically Incorrect's Greatest Hits."
"Politically Incorrect With Bill Maher" ended its run in July 2002. Maher followed "Politically Incorrect" with a new show in 2003 - "Real Time with Bill Maher." This weekly political comedy talk show runs on HBO and features an opening monologue with Maher and then a one-on-one interview with a guest. The show has been nominated for an Emmy 10 times.
Maher has written a number of bestsellers, "Does Anyone Have A Problem With That? Politically Incorrect's Greatest Hits," "When You Ride ALONE You Ride With Bin Laden." "True Story," "New Rules: Polite Musings from a Timid Observer," and "The New New Rules: A Funny Look at How Everybody but Me Has Their Head Up Their Ass."
In 2010 Maher received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Maher continues to host "Real Time with Bill Maher." He has been nominated for an Emmy a record 23 times. He also makes special guest appearances as a commentator on other political shows including "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer," "Hardball with Chris Matthews," "Larry King Live," "The Rachel Maddow Show," and "Countdown with Keith Obermann."
