For nearly 50 years, Bob Weir has been known for being the most distinctive rhythm guitarist in rock ‘n' roll. Influenced by hard bop pianist McCoy Tyner, John Coltrane and Igor Stravinsky, Weir has brought unusual depth and a new approach to the role of rhythm guitar expression over the years.
At age 17, Weir became the co-founder, guitarist and vocalist of the improvisational jam band Grateful Dead. The band enjoyed a 30-year career with songs written by Weir, including "Truckin'," "Sugar Magnolia" and "Cassidy." Weir also found success apart from the group, releasing his first solo album Ace in 1972 and playing in a number of other bands such as Kingfish, Bob Weir Band, Bobby and the Midnites, Scaring the Children, RatDog and Furthur. In 1994, Weir and his band mates of Grateful Dead were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2007 they were honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
