Who would ever think that great Irish punk-rock could come out of Los Angeles? Well grab a pint and raise your glass for Flogging Molly, who's taking their "love of Irish music" and making it their own.
And just in case you were wondering how Irish this band really is, Dublin native and frontman Dave King met most of the other members in a bar named Molly Malone's, where Guinness is on tap. The band actually took its name from their residency at the bar, where their live shows "flogged the place into worship."
Before forming Flogging Molly, King was the lead singer of a heavy metal band called Fastway. He also fronted a hard rock band called Katmandu. In 1993 King put together Flogging Molly and they began to play their mix of Irish traditional and rock music. They continued to play every Monday night at Molly Malone's and put out a live album called "Alive Behind the Green Door" in 1997.
Over the years, the group performed on the Warped Tour and Larry Kirwin's American Fléadh Festival. In March 2007 Flogging Molly released an EP through iTunes called "Complete Control Sessions," which contained new tracks as well as acoustic versions of previous songs. In 2008, "Float" was released, the first album the band recorded in Ireland. It landed at No. 4 on the Billboard Top 200 chart on the strength of singles like "Requiem for a Dying Song" and the title track. The band's 2009 album "Drunken Lullabies" went gold.
Flogging Molly released a live CD called "Live at the Greek Theater" in 2010. The band now performs every year on their annual "Green Tour."
