Gallagher set the bar for physical comedy for decades. Now he's taking a stab at traditional stand-up and observational comedy, in farewell tour, which hits Vegas this summer.
There is no watermelon smashing in his show at the Laugh Factory, but Gallagher hasn't forgotten his famous Sledge-O-Matic. He explains that, like the giant wooden mallet, comedy is designed to let people show how they really feel.
Do you scrape the dry food off plates when they come out of the dishwasher? Do you hate sporks? Do you hold politically incorrect beliefs about people of other races? Gallagher is not afraid to call you out.
"Comedians need prejudice," he said the night we saw his show. He explained that his job is to let guests release their feelings through laughter.
Gallagher's new show relies on political and social commentary to keep that laughter going. He points out things he says we all do and think, and he tells the audience, "When you laugh, I know you do it!"
