Grand Funk Railroad
When Mark Farner, Don Brewer and Mel Schacher were looking for a name to fit their band's powerful, bluesy music, they had to look no further than their home state of Michigan for a state-wide landmark called The Grand Trunk Railroad. Since their music had a funky quality to it, the Trunk was changed to Funk and a legend was born.

Grand Funk Railroad hit the festival circuit starting with a successful performance at the 1969 Atlanta Pop Festival. They soon landed a contract with Capitol Records, which had to rush the release of their first album because of strong demand.

The group's commitment to touring produced a series of big-selling albums over the next few years -- five of their eight releases from 1969 to 1972 went platinum, and the others all went gold.

In 1973 the band scored a No. 1 hit with the title track of the Todd Rundgren-produced "We're an American Band." Their next album, "Shinin' On," contained another No. 1 hit in a remake of Little Eva's "The Loco-Motion."

The band re-formed in 1981 with Dennis Bellinger on bass and released two albums. The band broke up again and reunited again in 1996 to play to 250,000 people in 14 shows during a three-month period. In 1997 the band played three sold-out Bosnian benefit concerts and released a live two-disc benefit CD called “Bosnia.” Two years later, Capitol issued a three-disc box set retrospective, "Thirty Years of Funk: 1969-1999."

In 2000, Brewer and Schacher recruited lead vocalist Max Carl of .38 Special and former Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick along with keyboard player Tim Cashion. Grand Funk Railroad continues to tour, playing about 40 shows a year.
