Jerry Seinfeld's unique brand of observational humor has made him a huge success as a stand-up comic and as a television star.
Seinfeld jumped into comedy the evening following his college graduation with an amateur try-out at New York's Catch A Rising Star comedy club. He spent the early years of his career performing at a number of local clubs, sometimes for free. His work paid off with an appearance in a 1976 Rodney Dangerfield special on HBO. Then in 1981, Seinfeld's career as a stand-up comic took off after successful performances on the "Tonight Show."
Many comedians dream of landing their own TV series, but few managed to do so with greater success than Seinfeld.
In 1989, he co-created the NBC pilot "The Seinfeld Chronicles," which turned into the classic TV show "Seinfeld." The self-proclaimed "show about nothing" premiered in 1990 and the last episode aired in 1998 after nine highly successful years. "TV Guide" ranked the comedy No. 1 on its 2002 list of the "50 Greatest Shows of All Time."
Instead of pursuing a film career after the show ended, Seinfeld returned to stand-up comedy with a sold-out concert tour.
In the spring of 2002, he appeared in a documentary, "Comedian," about his return to the comedy circuit with a new act.
Seinfeld continues to perform to sold-out audiences and lent his voice to the DreamWorks animated film "Bee Movie." He appeared in a "Seinfeld" reunion on HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" in 2009. In 2012, he launched an Internet comedy series called "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee."
