American progressive rock band Kansas rose to fame the 1970s. Popular hits included "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind."
The group formed in 1970 in Topeka, Kansas. Kansas released its self-titled debut album in 1974, which defined the band's heavy blues rock sound. In 1976, Kansas released its fourth album, "Leftoverture," which spawned the hit single, "Carry On Wayward Son."The band's follow-up album, 1977's "Point of Know Return," featured the title track and "Dust in the Wind." Both songs became hit singles.
"Leftoverture" reached No. 5 on Billboard's pop album chart, while "Point of Know Return" reached No. 4. "Carry On My Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind" were both certified gold.
In 1979, the group released "Monolith," which featured a Top 40 single, "People of the South Wind." While it didn't garner the success of the previous two albums, it still went platinum.
After creative differences in the 1980s, some of the members left the group to form their own bands. To date, the group has 14 studio albums, with its most recent one, "Somewhere to Elsewhere" in 2000. From the original band, Phil Ehart (drums, percussion), Steve Walsh (keyboards, synthesizers, percussion, vocals) and Rich Williams (guitar) remain in the group.
"Dust in the Wind" was certified gold as a digital download in 2005, almost three decades after selling one million copies as a single. "Carry On Wayward Son" has been included on several movies and TVs including "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," "Family Guy," "Happy Gilmore," "Scrubs" and "Supernatural," to name a few. This song also had featured spots video games like "Guitar Hero Smash Hits" and "Rock Band Unplugged."
