Singer and songwriter Natalie Cole rose to fame in the mid ’70s with the release of her hit songs “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love),” “Inseparable” and “Our Love.” Before that she was already in the spotlight as daughter of jazz legend Nat King Cole and Duke Ellington Orchestra singer Maria Hawkins Ellington.
Cole got her first taste of the music industry when she was 6 by singing on her father’s Christmas album. With her family background, music was always an influential part of Cole’s life. She grew up listening to jazz, soul and blues artists. After graduating from college, Cole started performing in small clubs with her band, Black Magic. Her notoriety as the daughter of Nat King Cole helped the budding songstress land gigs in various venues, where she later gained the attention of producers Chuck Johnson and Marvin Yancy.
Together they created several records that helped Cole get a recording contract with Capital Records, the same label as her father. Cole released her debut album, “Inseparable,” in 1975. Featuring the hit songs “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” and “Inseparable,” the album was an instant success. Both songs reached No. 1 on the R&B charts. The album also earned Cole a Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
In 1976, Cole released her second album “Natalie,” which featured the hit songs “Sophisticated Lady (She’s a Different Lady)” and “Mr. Melody.” Her third album, “Unpredictable,” was the first one to go platinum and contained the No. 1 hit “I’ve Got Love on My Mind.”
The singing sensation was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1979. The following year Cole released her eighth studio album, “Don’t Look Back.” After a brief slump in her career, Cole returned to the charts in 1987 with the release of her album “Everlasting.” The album contained the hit songs “Jump Start (My Heart),” “I Live For Your Love” and her cover of the Bruce Springsteen song “Pink Cadillac.”
Since then Cole had continued to release music and perform. In 1991, she released “Unforgettable … with Love,” which featured Cole singing songs her father recorded. In 2008, she released a follow-up to this album called “Still Unforgettable.” The album includes Cole’s renditions of songs made famous by her father and other artists, including Frank Sinatra.
Along with her success in the music industry, Cole has made numerous appearances on television and in feature films. Some of her more recent TV credits include her performance of “Something’s Gotta Give” on American Idol in 2009 and her appearance on “Real Housewives of New York City” in 2011.
