The speed metal band Slayer formed in Huntington Beach, Calif., in 1982 and within two years, caught the attention of Brian Slagel, president of indie label Metal Blade Records, who quickly signed them.
Slayer's first album, "Show No Mercy," was released in December 1983.
The 1985 album "Hell Awaits" gave the band its first taste of success, selling over 100,000 copies in the U.S.
In 1986, "Reign in Blood" was hailed as a breakthrough in heavy metal by critics and fans alike.
"Seasons in the Abyss" cemented Slayer's status as one of the most popular metal acts of the decade, selling over a million copies in the U.S. alone. They also embarked on a huge tour, "Clash of the Titans," with Alice in Chains, Anthrax and Megadeth.
In 1991, Slayer marked its 10th anniversary as a band with a double-live album, "Decade of Aggression," another platinum hit.
"Diabolus in Musica" was released in the summer of 1998 and "God Hates Us All" was released in 2001, followed by a European tour, "Tattoo the Planet," which was somewhat truncated by flight restrictions following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.
Slayer earned its first Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance in 2002.
Following a long hiatus, the band returned in 2006 with a new album, "Christ Illusion," which debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.
The band's most recent album, "World Painted Blood," was released in 2009. It peaked at No. 2 on the U.S. Top Hard Rock Albums and No. 12 on the U.S. Billboard Top 200 chart.
