Steven Wright

Call him King of the Mundane or the Duke of Deadpan but whatever your nickname of choice may be, Steven Wright's uncanny revelations about day-to-day life have put him at the top of the comedy court.

And with his tall, lanky frame, long face and wiry hair, Wright looks like the average person you'd meet on the street. His success, however, has made his appearance -- and dry wit -- anything but common in the comedy world.

In the hands of a lesser comedian, jokes such as: "No matter what temperature the room is, it's always room temperature" wouldn't even register on the funny meter. But add Wright's monotone delivery and odd twists, and a simple joke becomes a revelation.

Along with touring, his take-it-or-leave-it comedy and outlandish observations continue to make him a frequent guest on the late night talk show circuit. He regularly appears on the "Late Show with David Letterman" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live."

Wright was discovered in 1982 when the executive producer of "The Tonight Show" checked out a bizarre Boston venue that was a combination Chinese restaurant and comedy club. Wright happened to be performing that night and his shtick and audience appeal won him an appearance on Johnny Carson's late-night show where he was an immediate hit.

Extremely successful on network and cable TV, Wright has appeared as a host on "Saturday Night Live" and received a Grammy nod for his stand-up album "I Have a Pony." He also earned an Academy Award for his short film "The Appointments of Dennis Jennings."

Wright has also appeared in many movies, such as "Desperately Seeking Susan," "So I Married an Axe Murderer" and "The Muse."

Noticing that his audience was evolving with him, Wright wanted to reach the generation that would recognize him from movies like "Half Baked." In 2006 he produced a stand-up special, his first in 16 years, called "Steven Wright: When the Leaves Blow Away." In 2007 he released a follow-up to "I Have a Pony" titled "I Still Have a Pony," which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. In 2008 he became the first inductee into the Boston Comedy Hall of Fame.

Wright has been named the No. 23 comedian on Comedy Central's list of the 100 greatest stand-up comedians and is one hell of a funnyman that you will want to witness for yourself.
