Taylor Hicks

A new year has brought an exciting new Vegas venue to Taylor Hicks. In 2012, he wowed crowds in The Indigo lounge at Bally's. At the beginning of 2013, he took the helm of Napoleon's at Paris Las Vegas. Having recently signed a year-long contract extension with Caesars Entertainment, Hicks is the first "American Idol" winner with a long-term residency on the Strip.

Las Vegas is a long way from Alabama, where Hicks was born and raised. A lover of music from a young age, he bought a harmonica when he was 16 and began experimenting with pitches. At 18, Hicks wrote his first song, and a year later he taught himself to play electric guitar.

While in college Hicks joined a band, but later quit to start his own band. Within a year he was independently recording an album, "In Your Time." Hicks moved to Nashville in 2000 to pursue a music career and worked with veterans there to record a demo. When he didn't find a label to sign him, Hicks returned home and began touring around the Southeast.

His big break, of course, came in 2005 when Hicks auditioned (in Las Vegas of all places) for "American Idol" and was approved for the show. He went on to win the competition in May 2006 before a worldwide audience of more than 200 million TV viewers. At the age of 29, he was the oldest contestant to triumph.

Shortly after, Hicks signed a contract with Arista Records. His first major label debut, "Taylor Hicks," came out in late 2006. The following year he published an autobiography for Random House called "Heart Full of Soul: An Inspirational Memoir About Finding Your Voice and Finding Your Way." Hicks released his second album, "The Distance," in 2009 for his own label, Modern Whomp Records. He is currently working on his first country album.

Fans in Vegas will enjoy hearing Hicks perform in Napoleon's. It has large open windows that front a replicated French street scene. The elegant yet whimsical location suits Hicks' booming voice and soulful ballads -- creating an evening you won't soon forget.
