The Temptations

The Temptations were one of the most influential male Motown groups of the 1960s. The initial five-man lineup came together in Detroit in 1961 when two groups, the Primes and the Distants, merged.

The Temptations signed to the Motown subsidiary Miracle, where they released several singles. Only one, "Dream Come True," achieved any commercial success.

Success came in a big way in 1964 after entering the studio with producer Smokey Robinson. They released the smash "The Way You Do the Things You Do," the first in an amazing series of 37 career top 10 hits.

With Robinson again at the controls, they returned in 1965 with their signature song, "My Girl," as well as with hits like "It's Growing," "Since I Lost My Baby," "Don't Look Back" and "My Baby."

After the chart-topping ballad "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)" in 1971, some of the members left the group and they went through a complex series of lineup changes.

They had a big hit in 1972 with the No. 1 single "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," but their success waned as the '70s went on.

The intervening years were marked by tragedy when most of the group members died. In 1998, The Temptations triumphantly returned with "Phoenix Rising," and that same year, their story was the subject of a well-received NBC television miniseries.

"Ear-Resistable" followed in the spring of 2000. This album won the group its third Grammy, this one for "Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance." In 2004, the group released its final Motown album, "Legacy." That same year, Rolling Stone magazine ranked The Temptations No. 67 on its list of "100 Greatest Artists of All Time."

Under the company New Door Records (a label under Universal Motown Records Group), The Temptations released 2006's "Reflections," which featured covers of popular Motown songs. The group recorded "Back to Front," another album of soul music covers in 2007.

Original member Otis Williams continues to tour with The Temptations with long-time member (since 1983) Ron Tyson, Bruce Williamson, Joe Herndon and Terry Weeks. The group released their latest album, "Still Here" in 2010 and received the Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2013.
