Ivan Kane's Forty Deuce Review

Here's your challenge: grab the attention of an entire nightclub full of carousing tourists, dance-happy locals, networking VIPs and the occasionally inebriated convention-goer.

You can't pull the fire alarm. You can't start a fire. No bullhorn will be provided.

Need a hint?

Fully-clothed women.

Wait – what?

Exactly.

This is Ivan Kane's Forty Deuce and it's one of the major faces of burlesque in Las Vegas today.

Five nights a week, Kane and his troupe of some of the sexiest women this side of a feather boa captivate and titillate by taking some of it off and leaving some to the imagination.

Even though there's some removal of clothing, it's not stripping, which is an easy mistake to make.

"You can misinterpret what is easily described as a strip tease show as a strip club," Kane said. "But it's not.

Burlesque dancers also bring years of training and performing to their craft. Most of the women in Kane's clubs (there's also one in Hollywood) are classically-schooled dancers.

"It was always my intention to kind of reinvent burlesque in a different way," Kane said. "I decided to use world class dancers to kind of design the performance in such a way that it starts off slow and sultry and builds to a frenzied uptempo."

With a pack of carefully selected dancers (very carefully – Kane said if he sees 200 girls for an audition, he might be lucky to cast one), the bodies at Forty Deuce are lean, toned and impeccable.

Carolyn Pace, who has been dancing with Forty Deuce since 2004, was trained in classical ballet before joining the club. And while burlesque doesn't foster the same kind of one-on-one intimacy you might find in a gentleman's club, they're also not quite as removed as the dancers in a production of "Swan Lake."

"I try to take [the crowd] on a journey," Pace said. "I make eye contact and try and bring them in."

It would seem with a bunch of sexy women running around trying to bring people in, the audience would skew toward the male gender, but that's not entirely true.

Alana Litavis, marketing manager for Forty Deuce, said the crowd is actually generally mixed, full of men, women, couples – occasionally there's a slightly older demographic that doesn't always come out for the club scene.

Part of this sweeping appeal is an emphasis on female empowerment inherent in burlesque shows.

Pace said in her experiences at the club, the shows (which run at intervals throughout the night) seem to inspire women in the audience to "let their female side out."

Or, as Kane put, it "release their sexuality."

Whatever the reason for checking out a burlesque show, everyone seems to agree on the ideal end – feeling entertained.

"I want them to have a good time, something memorable and certainly something that needs to be talked about after," Kane said.
